There are multiple offerings and different advantages and options regarding volumetric space for lighter loads and payload limits for heavier loads. Although the payload might be a high limit, the total take-off weight can not exceed the aircraft limit for MTOW (maximum Take Off Weight) meaning often a trade-off regarding payload for fuel depending on range.
Aircraft like the 747, 777, A350 and A340 offer larger cubic capacity, with longer ranges while mid-range options like the A330 struggle on longer ranges and the payload is much reduced as they do not have centre tanks and limited with take off weights so cargo is reduced for fuel meaning either fuel stops, or reduced loads.
Long-Haul & Ultra Long Range:
- Boeing 747-8F: With its unique nose-loading capability and a maximum payload of 140 tonnes, the 747-8F remains the undisputed champion for oversized and project cargo, boasting a range of 4,390 nautical miles.
- Boeing 777F: This versatile workhorse offers a balance of payload (102 tonnes) and range (4,970 nautical miles), making it a popular choice for major cargo airlines worldwide. The forthcoming 777-8F, with its promised efficiency gains, aims to solidify Boeing’s stronghold in this segment.
- Airbus A350F: Leveraging the A350’s advanced technology and fuel efficiency, the A350F boasts an impressive 109-tonne payload and an 8,700 nautical mile range, positioning it as a strong contender for ultra-long-haul cargo routes.
- A340-600 P2F as operated by European Cargo: With its extended 7,300 nautical mile range and 75.8-tonne payload capacity, this converted passenger aircraft caters to routes where reach is combined with a significant payload.
Mid-Range:
- Boeing 767-300F: A mainstay in the cargo market, the 767-300F offers a balance of payload (52-54 tonnes) and range (3,225 nautical miles), making it suitable for various medium to long-haul operations. Its reliability and versatility have made it a popular choice for many cargo airlines.
- Airbus A330-200F & A330-300 P2F: These Airbus offerings provide cost-effective options for medium to long-haul routes. The A330-200F, with up to a 70-tonne payload, can reach up to 4,000 nautical miles without a center tank. The A330-300 P2F, also with a 70-tonne payload, offers a spacious main deck and increased cargo volume but might have limited range without additional fuel tanks.
Short-Haul Workhorses:
- Boeing 737 Classic & NG Conversions: The 737 Classic conversions, especially the -300 and -400 variants, remain prevalent in the short-haul cargo market due to their abundance and affordability. The 737NG conversions bring improved efficiency and modernity, with a payload of around 23.9 tonnes and a range of 2,000 nautical miles.
- Boeing 757-200PCF: This converted passenger aircraft boasts a high payload of 39.8 tonnes and an extended range of 2,935 nautical miles, making it ideal for express cargo operations and routes requiring both capacity and reach.
- Airbus A320/A321 P2F: These conversions are gaining popularity, particularly for e-commerce and express deliveries. The A320 P2F offers efficiency and a 21-tonne payload, while the A321 P2F provides a larger cargo volume of 27 tonnes, both with a range of around 2,000 nautical miles.
As the industry navigates challenges and embraces new opportunities, both Airbus and Boeing continue to innovate, ensuring a competitive and evolving landscape for air cargo transportation. Each option offers a viable product and the selection is based on operational needs commercially for the cargo being carried.
