Description
Safety Management Systems (SMS) are now mandated across the aviation industry and their presence will continue to grow as an effective tool in visually managing risk, occurrence and reports within organisations. SMS offers a tool for an organisation and management to gain an understanding and better approach to safety and how it is managed and prioritised based on an effective SMS system and collaborative buy in from the company as a whole.
This course looks at what an SMS is and how we can work with and use them with a focus then on the Bowtie risk management tool and how specifically we can use the bow tie risk management tool.
Target audience
This SMS Course is aimed at any individual within a company wishing to promote a Safe Company Culture, and requiring an introduction to SMS to fulfil their role contributing to safety in aviation.
Aims
To introduce the concepts of safety management systems; how we interact with risk assessments and the use of data from safety management systems as a high-level management tool. We then introduce the Bowtie SMS and explain the fundamentals of how the SMS methodology works can be utilised; the course covers topics including:
- Introduction and overview of SMS.
- Framework of SMS.
- Introduction to Bowtie SMS.
- The Bowtie SMS Methodology.
- Using Bowtie SMS as a tool.
- Interacting with Bowtie SMS for results.

Suggested duration for completion is 6 hours.
Interval for continuation
There is no requirement to have interval training for this course – we recommend if you refresh the course if you have not had any interaction with management or interaction with SMS systems in 18-24 months or more.
